Housing in Toomelah

3 February 2016

Statement by NSW Aboriginal Land Council Chair Roy Ah-See

The administration and delivery of Toomelah Local Aboriginal Land Council housing is the responsibility of Gunida Gunyah Aboriginal Corporation, a specialist housing management service.

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) understands that the action taken by Gunida Gunyah was a last resort and followed extensive consultation with the community to address issues around rent arrears.

NSWALC also understands that Gunida Gunyah has also offered extensive support for tenants including support from its Tenancy Support Team, referrals to the Tenancy Advocacy Service and specialist homelessness services who were on hand yesterday to assist.

It would appear that Gunida Gunyah has done all it can to balance the needs of tenants in difficulty with its responsibilities to properly manage housing on behalf of the Local Aboriginal Land Council.

These are difficult and sensitive issues but I urge people to take advantage of the extensive support systems that are available for people facing difficulty in meeting their rental payments.
