NSW Aboriginal Land Council Congratulates NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) congratulates Gladys Berejiklian on being elected as the 45th Premier of New South Wales.

It is an historic moment for our state as Premier Berejiklian was returned with a majority government, becoming the first woman to be elected as Premier in NSW.

“It is staggering that it has taken until 2019 for New South Wales to vote in a female Premier, so this is a significant moment for both the state and Premier Berejiklian to be immensely proud of,” NSWALC Chairman Roy Ah-See said.

“With Premier Berejiklian we have been on the right track in resetting the relationship between Government and our peak body. That’s in large part thanks to the Premier’s personal vision and leadership. I look forward to our relationship strengthening for years to come so together we can achieve great results and outcomes for the Aboriginal community.”

NSWALC would also like to pass on its congratulations to MP’s who have taken on portfolio responsibilities as part of Premier Berejiklian’s new look cabinet.

In particular, Don Harwin MLC has replaced Sarah Mitchell MLC as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs.

“I would like to thank Minister Mitchell for her service and contribution to the Aboriginal Affairs portfolio and I look forward to working closely with Minister Harwin and continuing to deliver on real outcomes for our community,” Cr Ah-See said.

“A reinvigorated Cabinet can help bring renewed drive and direction to Government and it is important to bring fresh perspectives. However, NSWALC’s priorities and those of our people remain, so we will be looking to maintain momentum and progress in our dealings with the State Government.”

“A key focus for NSWALC is fixing the state’s housing and water crisis and improving living conditions for our people in those affected townships. So I also look forward to working closely with new Minister for Water and Housing Melinda Pavey to bring about some solutions and change.”
