13 March 2018

NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) Chair Roy Ah-See has congratulated Kamilaroi woman Julie Shelley who is this year's NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year.

Cr Ah-See said Julie Shelley - an Aboriginal counsellor at Western Sydney Local Health District - was an inspiration to Aboriginal women.

"In a career spanning almost 50 years, Julie has made an enormous difference to the lives of Aboriginal women in Western Sydney as a counsellor and community leader.

"Julie Shelley lives up to this year's NAIDOC Week theme - Because of Her, We Can - and the Land Rights network pays tribute to her passion and dedication.

"From beginnings as a volunteer phone counsellor, Julie Shelley juggled work, study and family - she exemplifies the strength and resilience of Aboriginal communities."

The NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year Award was presented by Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Sarah Mitchell at the ICC in Sydney on International Women's Day.
