NSWALC congratulates Andrea Mason on her appointment to the Disability Royal Commission.

The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) has welcomed the appointment of Andrea Mason OAM to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability.

Ms Mason will serve as one of five Commissioners assisting the Chair, the Hon Ronald Sackville AO QC.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are 1.7 times more likely to be living with a disability than other Australians.

NSWALC Chair Roy Ah-See congratulated Ms Mason on her appointment.

“Andrea Mason is a strong leader and as Commissioner, she will provide powerful advocacy for our people, who are more likely to be living with a disability, and disproportionately affected by abuse in the disability sector.”

Andrea Mason is the chief executive of the Ngaanyatjarra, Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara (NPY) Women’s Council, and serves as Co-Chair of the Prime Minister’s Indigenous Advisory Council with NSWALC Chair Roy Ah-See.

The Royal Commission has been granted additional resources to assist people with disability across the country to give evidence, in particular those living in remote communities.

An interim report is expected by the end of October 2020, with the final report due in April 2022.
