NSWALC welcomes re-election of Morrison Government

The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) has welcomed the re-election of the Morrison Liberal National Party Government.

NSWALC Chairman, Cr Roy Ah-See said his organisation had an excellent working relationship with retiring Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Senator Nigel Scullion and expected this to continue with his successor.

“Nigel Scullion leaves big shoes to fill, but we look forward to working with the new Minister who we are confident will share his priorities of economic development, jobs and Aboriginal procurement,” Cr Ah-See said.

Cr Ah-See also welcomed the policy agenda of the Government, which includes:

  • Funding of $34.1 million to strengthen Aboriginal youth suicide prevention;
  • Implementation of the Western Sydney City Deal whichwill create 20,000 new jobs for Aboriginal people; and
  • A new partnership with the Coalition of Aboriginal Peak Bodies as foreshadowed in the Prime Minister’s Closing the Gap speech.

“These initiatives can make a positive difference to Aboriginal people and we look forward to working with the new Minister to progress them,” Cr Ah See said.

Cr Ah-See also welcomed the re-election of Indigenous Health and Aged Care Minister, Ken Wyatt. “We now have some high calibre Aboriginal Members and Senators in the parliament.”

“NSWALC encourages them all to continue working in a bi-partisan way on the long-term challenges and opportunities for our people,” he said.
