NSWALC Welcomes State Curriculum Review Recommendations

The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council welcomes key recommendations to introduce compulsory Aboriginal studies into the state’s education curriculum.

NSWALC is aware of the independent review being conducted and is heartened by this development.

It aligns with the ongoing work of the NSW Aboriginal Education Consultative Group to continuously advocate for better outcomes in education.

The interim report recommends that every student “develops at least a basic knowledge about, and appreciation of, Aboriginal languages, cultures and histories.”

“As a former school teacher myself, I firmly believe greater effort needs to be made to educate students on Australia’s cultural history. This is a step in the right direction,” NSWALC Chairperson and AECG Life Member Anne Dennis said.

“At a time when we are making great strides in closing the gap to provide better options and choices for our people, education programs can play such a significant role in raising awareness, particularly when it comes to protecting our culture and heritage.”

NSWALC applauds the Aboriginal Studies Association of NSW for its submission into the curriculum review and for moving this important issue forward.

NSWALC urges the state government and its Education Standards Authority to implement this recommendation and continue exploring ways to improve cultural awareness and teaching of Aboriginal history through the school system.
