The NSW Aboriginal Land Council election date has been set for Saturday, 30 November 2019. 

As per previous years, the NSW Electoral Commission will run the election.

We are seeking the assistance of Local Aboriginal Land Councils to distribute information about the election over the coming months and keep membership rolls up to date to promote our democratic land rights system.

What is the election for?

Nine Councillors will be elected to the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council for a four-year term, one for each of the Aboriginal Land Council  Regions a cross the state. 

NSWALC Councillors are elected to represent the political, cultural, social and economic interests of the Aboriginal community in New South Wales and make strategic decisions about the future of NSWALC and the land rights network. 

Candidate nominations 

Nominations for candidates interested in contesting the NSW Aboriginal Land Council Election will open on 8 October 2019. 

To nominate, candidates must:

• Be listed on a certified roll as a voting member for a LALC located in the region where they wish to be a candidate,
• Be nominated by at least 6 people (other than the candidate) who are entitled to vote, and
• Complete relevant NSW Electoral Commission forms and pay a $50 deposit to the NSW Electoral Commission by the close of the nomination period. 

Make sure you have your say in the future of Land Rights

Aboriginal people over 18 who are voting members of a Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) enrolled as at the date rolls close (9 September), can vote.

To find out if you are enrolled to vote, contact your Local Aboriginal Land Council.  

If you would like to vote but are not a LALC member you will need to become a member of your LALC before the rolls close. To become a member, you will need to apply, in writing, to your LALC.
