Commonwealth delivers on Aboriginal fishing

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) Chair Roy Ah-See today thanked the Federal Government for its strong commitment to Aboriginal fishing rights.

Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion will provide a $5 million grant to the NSWALC for the purchase of fishing licences in saltwater and freshwater areas of New South Wales.

Cr Ah-See said Minister Scullion's announcement was a critical step forward for Aboriginal peoples in New South Wales.

"Reforms to promote economic development for Aboriginal peoples in the fisheries sector are long overdue.

"Minister Scullion has listened to the Land Rights network's vital interest in the commercial fishing industry and recognises our right to fully participate in the economy.

"The Minister also understands that the NSW Aboriginal Land Council is best-placed to work with communities to take advantage of these commercial fishing opportunities."

Cr Ah-See said NSWALC would work with the NSW Government which last week earmarked Budget funding of $1.5 million towards an Aboriginal Fishing Trust Fund.

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Council is committed to working with representatives of the Federal and NSW governments to ensure Aboriginal peoples can contribute to the commercial fishing industry in New South Wales."
