The New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) announces that the Ashford Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) officially changed its name to Kwiambal Local Aboriginal Land Council late last month, marking an exciting and significant milestone for the Land Council and its community.
The change was formally published in NSW Government Gazette No. 301 on 24 July 2026.
The name Kwiambal reflects the cultural and historical connection of Kwiambal people to the Ashford district, including the Lower Severn River area. Members supported the change as a more appropriate reflection of the Country, Aboriginal heritage and community represented by the LALC.
Members endorsed the proposal following consultation at Members Meetings held in September 2024 and May 2025.
This important change follows a community-led process to adopt a name that better reflects the local area, its Aboriginal heritage and the community represented by the LALC.
NSWALC congratulates Kwiambal LALC and acknowledges the work of its members in reaching this significant milestone. We look forward to supporting Kwiambal LALC as it continues its work for the benefit of its members and community.
