The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) is very pleased to announce the historic appointment of Ms Clare McHugh as its new, and first female, Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Ms McHugh’s appointment will commence on 14 April 2025.
The appointment follows a recruitment process undertaken by the Council of NSWALC with the assistance of Orchard Talent Group, ensuring that the most qualified and visionary candidate was selected to lead NSWALC into the future.
Ms McHugh, a proud Gamilaroi and Dhungutti woman with connections to the Redfern, La Perouse and Central Coast Communities, comes to NSWALC from leading the Aboriginal Languages Trust as its first Executive Director where she has helped shape its foundations for future years. Ms McHugh brings extensive senior leadership experience and a deep commitment to Community and Land Rights.
“It’s an honour to step into this role. I am excited for the opportunities ahead, but I am also aware that there will be challenges to face and heavy lifting to do. I look forward to working alongside the Council and the Network to advocate for the continued advancement of Land Rights in NSW”, said Ms McHugh.
The Council of NSWALC looks forward to working with Ms McHugh in developing and delivering NSWALC’s Strategic Plan 2026-2030 and driving positive economic, social, and cultural outcomes for our Communities. It is a pivotal time for NSWALC and Aboriginal Land Rights, and Ms McHugh’s leadership will be critical to advancing NSWALC’s mission and agenda.
The Council sincerely thanks and acknowledges Ms Heidi Hardy for her dedicated leadership as transitional CEO. Her commitment has been instrumental in continuing to progress NSWALC’s important and transformational work. We thank her for her valuable contributions.
Ms McHugh’s appointment marks a significant milestone as NSWALC continues to grow its 40-year legacy of advocating for Aboriginal Land Rights, fostering economic independence, and creating opportunities for future generations.
