A powerful story is unfolding at Walhallow LALC in the North Region of NSW, home to a population of approximately 17,696 Aboriginal people. Rich in Cultural heritage, Walhallow is home to around 90 Aboriginal residents, with more than 400 Aboriginal people living in the surrounding communities.
The work taking place at Walhallow reflects the strength, resilience and aspirations of the local community, creating lasting opportunities for current and future generations.
Under the Australian Government’s Growing Regions Program, Walhallow LALC was provided with $1.54 million in funding back in 2024. This paved the way for the LALC to establish the Walhallow Community Infrastructure Project (WCIP) in partnership with Benchmark Certified.
The WCIP was driven by a community-led vision, shaped through consultation, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to creating lasting economic and employment opportunities. The project has delivered culturally significant infrastructure that supports health, education, tourism, and long-term community prosperity.
The town has also seen significant infrastructure upgrades, with facilities now meeting improved accessibility and service standards. Schools and Community hubs have also undergone refurbishment, creating more welcoming and functional spaces for everyone.
The program is expected to foster Cultural empowerment and education through the passing down of knowledge and language to future generations and a stronger pipeline of economic and employment opportunities through Community upskilling in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
Walhallow LALC demonstrates what is possible when Aboriginal Communities lead culturally informed projects. Its success highlights the power of Aboriginal leadership and reinforces the importance of genuine consultation and inclusion in decisions that affect Aboriginal Communities.
