Countdown to first National Indigenous Football Championships

NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) Chair Roy Ah-See is urging people to own their own piece of history by attending the inaugural National Indigenous Football Championships starting November 3.

Cr Ah-See said the Championships - to be held at the South Nowra Sporting Complex between November 3 and 5 - was a great opportunity to see quality football and meet up with family and friends.

NSWALC has approved a grant of $20,000 to support the registration costs of teams competing in the men's and women's competitions.

The grant has been made available under the NSWALC State-wide grants Community Benefits Scheme.

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Council is proud to invest in an event that brings communities together," Cr Ah-See said.

Cr Ah-See will also feature in the Johnny Warren Football Foundation Celebrity Match on Saturday.

NSWALC Councillor for South Coast Danny Chapman said it was an historic moment for the region to host the first-ever National Indigenous Football Championships.

"The NSW Aboriginal Land Council is excited to support the National Indigenous Football Championships.

"The tournament is a great vehicle for Aboriginal football players to display their talent on a national stage and hopefully on career pathways to W-League, A-League and national honours.

"The National Indigenous Football Championships will also be an important cultural gathering for Aboriginal people," Cr Chapman said.

National Indigenous Football Championships Tournament Director Bernie McLeod welcomed the partnership with NSWALC.

"The partnership with NSWALC to bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities together from across the nation is an unbelievable achievement," he said.
