Aboriginal Land Claims Consolidated Service Charter

19 September, 2024

An Aboriginal Land Claims Consolidated Service Charter (Charter) is now available.

The Charter has been developed in partnership by Crown Lands, the Office of the Registrar Aboriginal Land Rights Act, and the NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC).

As a key action in response to recommendations made by the NSW Audit Office in its 2022 audit into Aboriginal Land Claims processes, the Charter is a commitment and serves as a tool to support Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) by outlining the service standards to expect throughout the Aboriginal Land Claims process. Additionally, the Charter streamlines processes across government to enhance their efficiency.

The Consolidated Service Charter is composed of three parts:

  • Principles of Engagement
  • Service Charter
  • Operational Roles and Responsibilities of Government Agencies and NSWALC

The Service Charter highlights what LALCs can expect from the government regarding Aboriginal Land Claims and aims to strengthen the relationship between the government, LALCs, and NSWALC.

The Service Charter is also a crucial component of Crown Lands’ continued implementation of their Crown Lands State Strategic Plan, which prioritises accelerating the realisation of Aboriginal land rights in partnership with Aboriginal people.
