Funeral Assistance Grants

Monday, September 5th, 2014

I am writing to all LALCs and their members to clarify arrangements for financial assistance under NSWALC's Funeral Assistance Grants Scheme.

NSWALC will continue to provide funeral assistance grants to assist families during this sad time, that is our commitment and that is unchanged.

As always, there are two kinds of grants available from the funeral fund:

  1. Applications can be made for grants of up to $5000 if the deceased person was a member of the original Funeral Fund in the early 1990s, which closed in 1994.

or

  1. Applications can be made for grants of up to $1000 for any other Aboriginal person in NSW.

Recently, some families have been directly asking NSWALC for money over and above what these grants provide.

In fairness to everyone, Council has decided that NSWALC can no longer consider these individual requests for more money than the Funeral Grants Scheme allows.

This way the scheme can continue to help as many people as needed and as fairly and equally as needed.

As a Council we are responsible for the investment and expenditure of funds held in the NSWALC Account.

We are looking at every area of NSWALC spending in order to maximise its benefit for future generations.

The process for applying for Funeral Grants for NSW Aboriginal people is unchanged and full information and the application forms are on our website: https://alc.org.au/nswalc-in-the-community/funeral-fund.aspx .
