The National Agreement on Closing the Gap is built around four Priority Reforms to change the way in which governments work with Aboriginal People.
The priority reforms are:
- Formal partnerships and shared decision making
- Building the community-controlled sector
- Transforming government organisations
- Shared Access to Data and Information at a Regional Level
- Economic Prosperity and Employment (additional for NSW)
Find out more about the priority reform areas below.
Video: Priority reforms 1-4
We want to get your views about what is needed to drive these priority reforms and make the lives of Aboriginal people better. Your views will help to create practical action that could be included in NSW Implementation Plan (NSW IP) to support Aboriginal people, communities and organisations in taking charge of their own lives and development. The NSW IP will include actions to achieve the priority reforms, funding, timeframes and accountability mechanisms.
A Community Companion document has been written to help explain to you more about the National Agreement and the Priority Reforms and the next steps for NSW.

The National Coalition of Peaks
The National Coalition of Peaks is a representative body comprised of around forty Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peaks organisations that have come together to have their collective voice heard on issues that affect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Since the Closing the Gap framework and targets were first implemented in 2008, we have been calling on government to recognise the expertise that exist in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations.
In an historical agreement, the Coalition of Peaks has formed a Joint Partnership with the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) in order to collaborate on the Closing the Gap Refresh process. This is the first time that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices have not only been invited to the table, but have also been empowered with shared decision-making responsibilities.
The Partnership Agreement has now been signed by the Prime Minister. The Coalition of Peaks are beginning to work with the Joint Partnership to affect meaningful change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. For more information visit: coalitionofpeaks.org.au
