455th NSWALC Council Meeting

The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) met for its 455th Meeting on Thursday 21 March 2024 in Parramatta.

The meeting was the first meeting of the new Council since the NSWALC Elections were held in February 2024.

The 455th meeting followed a 2½ day induction schedule for Councillors. Councillors received an overview of various NSWALC business streams including the Community Outcomes Service Delivery Model; Land, Legal and Strategy; the CAPO Joint Partnership and Closing the Gap; Yarpa; Birribee Housing; Yilabara Solutions; Corporate Services and Social Enterprise Finance Australia (SEFA).

The Council discussed the important area of working together for the benefit of the Land Rights Network and Aboriginal communities and the principles of a proactive and collegiate operating culture.

Election of Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson

The new Council elected a Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson, with the election procedure presented by the Registrar of the Aboriginal Land Rights Act, Sally Skyring.

Councillor for the Sydney/Newcastle Region Ray Kelly was elected Chairperson and Councillor for the Western Region Ross Hampton was elected Deputy Chairperson.

Both Councillors were elected for the next two years, with mid-term Chair and Deputy elections to be held in 2026.

Reappointment of Independent Members of Council Committees

Council reappointed Marcia Doheny as the Independent Member and Chair of the NSWALC Audit and Risk Committee (ARC).

Michael Silk was also reappointed as the Independent Member of the ARC.

Carl Gunther was reappointed as the Independent Member of the NSWALC Finance Committee.

The Committees play an important role in ensuring the Council is in the best position possible to make informed decisions through good governance, communication and transparency.

Reappointment of Directors to NSWALC Housing Ltd

Council reappointed Craig Cromelin, Sally Kubiak and Wendy Morgan as Board Members of Birribee Housing.

2024 Council Meeting Dates

Council also approved a schedule of meeting dates for 2024, with the next Council meeting to be held on 1 – 2 May 2024.
