Ben Barba joins NSW Aboriginal Land Council

Wednesday, April 17, 2013

The state's peak body for Aboriginal interests, the New South Wales Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC), is proud to announce Canterbury Bulldogs superstar, Ben Barba, as its official ambassador for 2013.

Ben approached NSWALC some time ago, keen to work alongside the state's peak body to promote the importance of land rights and self-determination for Aboriginal people across the state.

As we celebrate 30 years of land rights in the state, NSWALC thought it fitting to accept Ben's proposal and work with him to engage the youth especially on the importance of land rights and the preservation of culture and heritage.

Chairman Stephen Ryan said the partnership with Ben was historic, as it's the first time land rights has a truly public face and a chance to promote itself on the national stage.

"Land rights in this state were hard-fought. Nearly every week we are honoring those warriors who've passed into the Dreaming, warriors that fought on the streets to make land rights a reality," he said.

"This is the first time those hard-won gains will have a truly public profile through this new partnership with Mr Barba."

Ben said he's honored to be partnering with the country's largest Aboriginal, member-based organisation.

"I'm pleased to be on board with the state land council. I've always been interested to learn about different factors affecting my people; I'm looking forward to being part of it.

"I'm a younger guy and am still learning everyday about land rights and what it means to Aboriginal people, especially in NSW. It's got a really interesting and important history.

"I think it's essential that I learn as much about the many issues the NSW Aboriginal Land Council deals with, so I can hopefully make a positive difference."

Ben will be working alongside NSWALC for the remainder of 2013, working towards the promotion of land rights across the state as well as educational and community programs.
