Narromine and Nyngan LALCs are receiving new social housing dwellings through the Social Housing Accelerator Fund (SHAF), which is an Australian Government initiative managed by NSWALC, and in partnership with NSW Aboriginal Housing Office (NSW AHO).
SHAF is an Australian Government initiative that provides funding to deliver social housing across the country.
Located in Narromine, Nyngan and Girilambone, the new dwellings were constructed on land owned by the Narromine and Nyngan LALCs, acquired through the land rights mechanisms established under the Aboriginal Land Rights Act (NSW) 1983 (ALRA), which is currently under threat from the NSW Government through the proposed Crown Land Management Amendment Bill (the Bill).
Aboriginal Communities across New South Wales have long experienced a shortage of safe and affordable housing, and NSWALCs’ continued partnership with SHAF supports working towards the housing needs in the Central Region.
Narromine LALC will accept the keys of the property on Thursday 23 July, and Nyngan LALC is set to accept the keys for the dwellings on Friday 24 July.
The delivery of this next round of housing in the Central Region is an example of how NSWALC and the NSW Land Rights Network can work alongside the Commonwealth and NSW AHO successfully to deliver affordable housing for Aboriginal people on Aboriginal land.
The Central Region development is part of the broader rollout of the Social Housing Accelerator Fund (SHAF), which has already delivered 30 community housing dwellings across the NSW Aboriginal Land Rights Network. The program continues to expand the supply of affordable housing for Aboriginal communities across the state.
NSWALC continues to advocate for better outcomes for Aboriginal people in NSW and is calling on the NSW Government to continue support of communities instead of implementing the Crown Lands Management Amendment Bill, which will hollow out Land Rights and support of Aboriginal people across the State.
