NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) and the Land Rights Network mourn the passing of David Brown, a Bundjalung Gumbaynggirr man and former NSWALC Councillor for the Far North Coast Region.
David Brown will be remembered for his commitment and dedication to the Local Aboriginal Land Council (LALC) Network as a former Councillor of NSWALC from 1992 until 2003. David became a member of his LALC in 1989, where he began his journey of advocating for Land Rights.
As a Councillor for NSWALC, David took on portfolios in Resources and Conservation assessment, Water Reform and was on the Native Title Sub-Committee.
In addition to being a Councillor, David worked as a CEO for a number of LALCs, including Yaegl, Jana Ngalee, Birrigan Gargle and Jali. One of his lasting legacies was working on programs to open doors for future employment and income for the LALC and community. He was a keen supporter of young people becoming active and involved in the Land Rights Network.
Cr Diane Randall, representing the North Coast Region of NSWALC, emphasised that in his tenure on the NSWALC Council, “David was highly respected for his support and leadership in his position within the LALC Network. David’s impact was significant. He was not just supportive but also acted as a guiding force. Each LALC has its vision, and David played a key role in turning their visions into reality.
“I am privileged to call David family and a mentor,” Cr Randall continued. “He was a man of integrity and hard work, a strong leader, and he built a lasting impact that will benefit future generations of Aboriginal people in his hometown of South Grafton and North Coast Region.
“On behalf of the Land Rights Network, I wish to express my condolences to the Brown family.”
The funeral service for David Brown will be held on the 14th of June at 1pm at the Salvation Army Citadel, Oliver Street, Grafton. Burial will follow at the Clarence Lawn Cemetery, Armidale Road, Braunstone.
