UPDATE: SAFETY MESSAGE – CYCLONE ALFRED IMPACTED AREAS

7 March, 2025

Our communities in the North and Mid-North coast of NSW are likely to be impacted by Cyclone Alfred which is currently tracking off the SE QLD Coast and is currently expected to make landfall this evening (Friday) or Saturday morning.

Advice from SES NSW for the Northern Rivers is to STAY INDOORS, UNLESS you have been directed to evacuate due to expected flooding. Cyclone impacts expected include damaging wind gusts, locally intense rainfall and severe coastal hazards.

Please expect to lose power if you haven’t already.

Whilst effort is being made to ensure water supply, people should also be prepared for the scenario that water supply may become hampered.

What to expect when Cyclone Alfred makes landfall

It is expected that Cyclone Alfred will make landfall in South-East Queensland first.

Alfred is most likely to cross over the Moreton Bay Islands early Saturday morning before crossing the mainland coast, most likely between Noosa and Beenleigh later during Saturday.

Alfred’s crossing could last three, six or even nine hours once it makes landfall.  This means, we should expect heavy rain, damaging to destructive winds, massive waves and abnormally high tides during that time.

It is essential that everyone is prepared. Please ensure you:

  • Secure loose outdoor items to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
  • Avoid coastal areas and stay away from beaches, rock platforms, and headlands.
  • Move valuables and important documents to higher ground in case of flooding.
  • Park vehicles away from trees and in higher areas.
  • Stay updated with warnings from NSW SES and the Bureau of Meteorology.
  • Many residents in Northern Rivers may be feeling concerned about the current weather event. For free health advice 24/7, call Healthdirect at 1800 022 222.

For emergencies, please call Triple Zero (000) or TTY 106. People are also able to call the NSW SES direct on 132 500.

For the most up to the minute information, please follow the NSW SES Facebook page HERE.

It is essential we all heed the safety warnings by preparing our homes for STORM and FLOOD and evacuate when requested.  Advice on how to prepare your home for flood is available on the NSW SES website HERE.

Again, for emergencies, please call either Triple Zero (000) or TTY 106 and/or NSW SES on 132 500 and keep safe.
