Illarrah Roberts

Illarrah Roberts is from the Bundjalung, Gamilaroi and Euahlayi Nations and is a granddaughter of Michael Ghillar Anderson, a founder of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra.

Illarah says it’s important to acknowledge the Tent Embassy as an enduring symbol of Aboriginal protest, Aboriginal Sovereignty over the Australian continent and Indigenous Rights to Self-Determination.

She will use her YAC experience to encourage young Aboriginal people to join their Local Aboriginal Land Councils and develop ways that she can have a positive local impact among her peers, particularly around issues such as intergenerational trauma, mental health and unhealthy lifestyles.

Illarrah is a member of the Jali Local Aboriginal Land Council and is an avid sportswoman, including competing in the First Nations Rugby Sevens, Athletics NSW’s Junior Championships, Under 18’s Sydney Roosters Tarsha Gale Cup, and is a former member of the Under 19s Gold Coast Rugby League Titans Academy.
