Vale Bonita Mabo 

The Land Rights network extends its sorrow and condolences to the family of Dr Bonita Mabo, who has passed away.

NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) Chair Roy Ah-See said Aunty Bonita made enormous contributions to social justice and human rights for First Nations peoples around Australia.

“Aunty Bonita was a staunch supporter of self-determination and the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our land and culture.

She campaigned alongside her late husband Eddie Koiki Mabo, during his long fight for Native Title and spent a decade on the Central Queensland Land Council”, he said.

Dr Mabo was the honorary patron of the Australian South Sea Islanders and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from James Cook University just days ago, acknowledging her work in human rights.

Cr Ah-See said “Aunty Bonita worked tirelessly for our people in the years since the death of her husband. 

On behalf of the NSW Aboriginal Land Council, I extend my sincere condolences at this very sad time.”
