Nominations for 2024 NSW Aboriginal Land Council Elections close tomorrow!

29 January, 2024

Nominations close tomorrow for the 2024 NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) elections to be held on 24 February 2024.

It’s a 12 noon sharp deadline on 30 January 2024 for people to submit their nomination to the NSW Electoral Commission. Late nominations will not be accepted.

Councillors are elected to each of the nine NSWALC Regions across the state to represent the political, cultural, social and economic interests of the Aboriginal community in New South Wales.

NSWALC CEO Yuseph Deen urged all eligible candidates to get their nominations in with the NSW Electoral Commission (NSW EC), taking into account the time required to prepare forms and lodge them with the NSW EC.

“It is so important people get involved,’’ Mr Deen said. “The elected Councillors are responsible for setting the strategic direction of NSWALC, allocating Council’s resources and making decisions on a range of important issues affecting Aboriginal people in New South Wales.”

“The new Council will be critical in ensuring the Land Rights Network builds on the success and the hard-fought gains of the last 40 years and continues to thrive. We have inherited a profound legacy and we need to continue to strengthen it for the next 40 years. The Network has never been in a better position to generate ongoing benefits from land acquisition and activation for Local Aboriginal Land Councils and Aboriginal communities,” he said.

Prospective candidates must fill in nomination forms and other documentation available on the NSW Electoral Commission website: https://elections.nsw.gov.au/elections/local-government-elections/becoming-a-candidate-alc24
