Time to make your mark! Applications open for NSWALC Youth Advisory Committee

27 August, 2024

Calling all Aboriginal youth who want to make a difference! The NSW Aboriginal Land Council (NSWALC) is seeking applications for its 2024 Youth Advisory Committee (YAC).

“It’s so important the voices of our youth are heard,’’ NSWALC Chairperson Cr Raymond Kelly said. “They are the voices of the future, and our next generation of Land Rights warriors.

“Our Youth Advisory Committee is a great way for young people to develop their skills in a whole range of different areas. These include engaging with youth groups across NSW; giving insight into current issues of importance to young Aboriginal people, particularly in a regional context; and to increase the participation of young Aboriginal people in the Land Rights Network,’’ Cr Kelly said.

As an example of making a difference, former YAC members have given powerful speeches at the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) and also at Black Parliament at Parliament House in Sydney.

The YAC is made up of nine members, one from each of the nine NSWALC Regions. It provides advice and recommendations to NSWALC on issues impacting young Aboriginal people, as well as developing youth-led, community-based strategies to respond to those issues.

Young Aboriginal people between the ages of 18 and 25, who are a member of a Local Aboriginal Land Council, with a passion for advocating on behalf of others, and who want to be a part of the Land Rights movement in NSW are invited to apply for the 2-year term.

You’ll find an information pack with more information below, please share with young people in your community.
